What is Autism?

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder is one of the neurodevelopmental disorders described in the DSM-V. It is a condition that is usually present in early childhood, but may become more evident at the time of school entry.1

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder is characterized by significant impairments in two areas: communication and social interaction, and specific behaviors, activities and interests. The symptoms represent a continuum that ranges from mild to severe, limiting and impairing daily functioning.1

  • Although the cause is unknown, in Canada, approximately 1 in 66 children between the ages of 5 and 17 have been diagnosed with ASD.2
